Mission
Founded in 1981 by Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre is an award-winning small professional theatre producing under a NEAT contract. Our mission is dedicated to promoting the writing and production of new plays.
Our theatre is also the home of the Graduate Playwriting Program. We are funded by and are part of The Graduate Creative Writing Department in the English Department of Boston University. We are a highly successful writers’ training program with award-winning alumni. We hire some of the best professional actors, directors, and designers in New England to bring these new writers’ works to life, and we have won many awards over the years, including “Boston’s Best” and a 2003 NETC Regional Award for “Outstanding Achievement in the American Theatre”.
