Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Theatre presents Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Merrily We Roll Along’

The Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Theatre presents Stephen Sondheim’s musical Merrily We Roll Along running April 28 through May 2 on the mainstage of the Boston University Theatre, in celebration of Sondheim’s eightieth birthday. For the first time, this production features acting and theatre arts majors from the BU School of Theatre as well as non-majors from other schools and colleges at the University. Merrily We Roll Along is based on the book by George Furth and the original play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. This production is directed by Jim Petosa and features Matthew Stern, music director; David Gram, book director; and Judith Chaffee, choreographer. A talkback with the director will follow both performances on Thursday, April 29.

The authors of the landmark Company reunite to turn the traditional showbiz musical on its head in this compelling Broadway parable about friendship, compromise, and the high price of success. Merrily begins in the present and moves backwards, tracing the life of wealthy, jaded composer Franklin Shepard as he transitions from a Broadway composer to a Hollywood producer, and abandons his two closest friends in the process. Merrily We Roll Along premiered on Broadway in 1981 and featured BU alumnus Jason Alexander in the role of Joe.

Petosa, who also serves as Director of the BU School of Theatre explains, “Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along has confounded critics and audiences for decades. Yet, the potency of its score and the emotional wallop of its climax continue to intrigue theatre artists, making it uniquely appropriate for college age actors.” He continues, “We’re pleased to provide Boston audiences with an opportunity to see this much-storied, but seldom performed, musical by the reigning American master of the art form.”
