Actors’ Shakespeare Project presents ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Actors’ Shakespeare Project continues its sixth season with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by A.S.P. Resident Director Benjamin Evett, previews on December 30th, 31st and January 1st, opening on January 2nd and running through January 24th at Midway Studios, 15 Channel Center St., Fort Point Channel, the performance venue for last season’s The Merchant of Venice and The Duchess of Malfi.

In this gutted & repurposed warehouse space hidden by the façade of smart office blocks, A.S.P. is delving into the dark matter of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “We want to find what is real and urgent in this play. ” says Director Ben Evett. “We are in the midst of a season about transformation. The forest is a dangerous place, where people’s vulnerabilities are unveiled, and that is what makes transformation possible. In our world, the real forest doesn’t have this resonance as much anymore, but the urban wilderness does. This setting allows the fairies to be dangerous, creative, and wild in a way that is real, not safely fantastical.”

No more is A Midsummer Night’s Dream the preserve of summer parks and stately homes, a play you think you know like the back of your hand. This production takes the audiences’ pre-conceptions of the play, and promptly turns them upside down. To achieve this, A.S.P. is using its largest cast to date led by Robert Walsh as Bottom, Marianna Bassham as Titania, and a host of A.S.P. Company members and guest artists. A.S.P. has also engaged in some deep partnerships for the project, including year-long collaboration with Boston Arts Academy (BAA). This fall, A.S.P. has been in residence at BAA with a series of text, movement, and acting classes. Six BAA students are among A.S.P.’s Midsummer cast. This spring, Jason Bowen and Magda Spasiano will be directing a student production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at BAA. Our costume consultant for the show, Olivia Failkow, is a student at the Cambridge School of Weston and was just recently named one of the 25 most fashionable Bostonians in the Boston Globe. A.S.P. is also collaborating with a youth team from Artists for Humanity, and the Graffiti artist PROBLACK, to create parts of our set. Lastly, Billy and Bobby McClain, both Midway resident artists known for their original hip-hop work, are choreographing the show.

A.S.P. Company Members Jennie Israel, John Kuntz & Robert Walsh lead the cast, which also features Marianna Bassham, Shelley Bolman, Lenise Farrier, Autumn Elise Henry, Michael Kaye, Curt Klump, Avante Lopez, Nelson Martinez, Trent Mills, Leah Ogawa, Karl Baker Olson, Maurice Emmanuel Parent, Mara Sidmore, Sabrina Saint Louis, Dayenne Byron Walters and Christopher James Webb.

Midway Studios, where ASP also staged The Merchant of Venice and The Duchess of Malfi, is at 15 Channel Center St. in the community of Fort Point Channel in South Boston, a flourishing neighborhood of over 600 visual artists, arts related businesses, and arts organizations.
